Introduction:

In conjunction with ControlNet India and Karmic, VLSI Society of India announces a two-week intensive hands-on workshop on Custom LSI Design. The workshop is open to students and faculty with strong interest in VLSI.  Preference will be given to students who have completed third year B.E./B.Tech or 1^st year M.E/M.Tech. We encourage small groups of students and faculty from the same organization to apply to take full advantage of the workshop. The number of participants from a single organization will be limited by the committee.  It is expected that the participant is familiar with basics of electronics, MOS transistor operation, and has done some reading in MOS LSI.  The workshop is intensive in hands-on activity and prior exposure to use of Linux/UNIX operating system is assumed.  Certificates will be provided to participants from the VLSI Society of India upon successful completion of projects.

Goals:

At the end of the workshop, the participant is expected to complete a design project, including its conceptualization, design, simulation, and custom layout implementation. There is a plan to fabricate successful projects from this effort through MOSIS (http://mosis.org).  Participants of selected projects will be given an opportunity at the VDAT Symposium (http://vlsi-india.org) to present their work.  In addition to custom LSI design experience, the participants will participate in group discussions and other team activities.

• Lectures

• Team activities

• Project Work (Groups of participants will carry out independent chip design projects)

Fees and Registration:

A uniform, non-refundable registration fee of Rs. 7000/- will be charged to participants. A discount of Rs 1000/- will be applicable to members of VSI – quote your VSI membership number and ensure that it is valid in June 2006. The fee includes simple accommodation, meals, and participation in the workshop with unlimited lab time. Travel and other expenses must be borne by the participant. A maximum of 30 participants will be admitted. Partial registration is not permitted.  When booking tickets, make sure that you will leave the premises only after 6.00 PM on the last day of the workshop.  Certificates will only be given on the last day of the workshop and will not be mailed to your address.  Queries may please be sent to cldw06@rediffmail.com only – please do not copy your emails to other addresses.

Rules:

Participants will be divided into two equal groups. Each group will include a “Lion tamer” (LT), a Karmic Engineer. The topic of the project will be selected via net discussion moderated by the LT amongst the selected delegates. The discussion will be opened on 1^st of May, 2006. In order to start the project on 1^st day as scheduled, we expect some background reading on the projects. Details will again be provided by the LT.  Remember, there will be no spoon feeding!

During the project, the delegates are expected to stay in the accommodation provided by the organizing committee.   Goa has good train connections to all parts of India through Mumbai, Pune, and Bangalore.  Numerous luxury buses run from Bangalore and Mumbai to Goa. Goa offers good tourist opportunities for participants at the conclusion of the workshop. Accommodation will be provided to participants, if needed, ahead of and after the workshop for sight-seeing on extra payment. No exceptions will be made to the rules.

Getting There

1. AIR ROUTE:
   Goa's only airport is located at Dabolim, Vasco - Goa.  From there you could hire a TAXI to come to Farmagudi. The distance is 50 kms (approx.).  Please make a deal with the TAXI Driver with regards to the fare he would charge before boarding.

2. TRAIN ROUTE:
   The closest railway station to the venue is at MADGAO. There is a PRE-PAID TAXI stand at the railway station. You could directly take a TAXI to the Venue.  Alternatively, you could take the TAXI only till the MADGAO "NEW" Bus Stand. [Please specify "NEW" Bus Stand]. The distance from the RAILWAY station to the MADGAO "NEW" Bus Stand is 4kms. From there take the PUBLIC TRANSPORT Bus to PONDA "NEW" Bus Stand. Please note that the public bus, enters first at the PONDA "OLD" Bus Stand, then it come to the PONDA "NEW" Bus stand.
   From the "NEW" Bus Stand at PONDA there are College Bus coming to the Engg. College. The timings of the Buses are at 08:30 AM, 08:45 AM, 09:10 AM, 09:30 AM, 01:00 PM, 01:40 PM, 05:10 PM, 05:20 PM. If you cannot make it on the college buses; then you could hire a Motor-Cycle Pilot, and come to the college. The Motor-cycle Pilot would charge max. Rs. 25/-.
   The distance from MADGAO "NEW" Bus Stand to PONDA "NEW" Stand, is approximately 22 kms.
