Imperials
The listing of Imperials alumni reads like a Who's Who list of Christian music. Past prodigies include, Russ Taff, Paul Smith, David Robertson, Jim Lee Sloas, Rick Will, Larry Gatlin, Sherman Andrus, Terry Blackwood, Jim Murray, and the list goes on. Almost as varied as the roster has been the changing of styles. Beginning as a Southern Gospel group, the Imperials were in demand almost from day one, working as background vocalists for many popular secular artists along with their own successful career.
When the decision was made to move toward the Pop arena, producer Chris Christian took the helm along with a new young vocalist by the name of Russ Taff. Their transitional release HEED THE CALL served up a number of classics including the title track and the ever-popular "Praise The Lord". Next with Taff still as the lead vocalist, producer Michael Omartian delivered once again by garnering awards and spawning other soon to become classics "One More Song For You", "Trumpet of Jesus", "The Eagle Song" and more.
The Imperials had completely converted to the world of pop when Taff left the band to pursue a solo career. Paul Smith took the lead and continued to offer solid pop music though the band never quite saw the success of the Taff/Omartian period. Eventually Smith also left the group to pursue a highly successful solo career. Enter Jimmy Lee Sloas and Rick Will. With these two powerful vocalists at the forefront, the Imperials slid even farther into the world of pop. THIS YEAR'S MODEL was a critical and commercial success. Since that time the Imperials have stayed firmly entrenched in the pop vein.
